It's Time to Tackle Interstellar Spaceflight, Experts Say

If humanity is serious about traveling to other star star systems in the foreseeable future, it needs to get the ball rolling now, say experts who have organized an upcoming conference on the subject.

Pulling off our species' first interstellar spaceflight will require many decades of hard work by some of the planet's best minds. Some scientists and engineers are pushing for that work to begin now.

New all-solid sulfur-based battery outperforms lithium-ion technology

(Phys.org) —Scientists at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory have designed and tested an all-solid lithium-sulfur battery with approximately four times the energy density of conventional lithium-ion technologies that power today's electronics.

The ORNL  design, which uses abundant low-cost elemental sulfur, also addresses flammability concerns experienced by other chemistries.

"Our approach is a complete change from the current battery concept of two electrodes joined by a , which has been used over the last 150 to 200 years," said Chengdu Liang, lead author on the ORNL study published this week in Angewandte Chemie International Edition.

Scientists have been excited about the potential of lithium-sulfur batteries for decades, but long-lasting, large-scale versions for commercial applications have proven elusive. Researchers were stuck with a catch-22 created by the battery's use of liquid electrolytes: On one hand, the liquid helped conduct ions through the battery by allowing lithium polysulfide compounds to dissolve. The downside, however, was that the same dissolution process caused the battery to prematurely break down.

16% of digital shoppers use mobile primarily: study

16% of digital shoppers use mobile primarily: study:

A new study, from GroupM, Next finds that:

  • 29% of digital consumers rely on search, retail and brand sites for shopping, but mobile is not their primary digital tool.
  • 16% use mobile primarily … are early adopters of many digital tools; convenience is primary. They're the most likely to use social media for decision input. Want to avoid salespeople and crowds …  and control their shopping experience. Value digital advertising.
  • 11% value information more than convenience, tend to be showroomers

The study also shows the role Amazon plays in showrooming and price comparison. :

  • Amazon is included in 17 percent of digital pathways  leading to a purchase, which is one-third of all traffic to retailer sites.
  •  37% of the time that a purchase path starts on Amazon, it ultimately ends elsewhere.
  • 35% of the Amazon-included purchase paths ultimately ended on Amazon.
  • Amazon is used in the middle of a purchase path 22% of the time, and 6% of Amazon-included paths solely use the online retailer.

IBM Turns Ads Into Useful Urban Furniture | Fast Company

Did you ever need a ramp for your luggage (or bike), or a shelter from a sudden downpour, or a place to sit down and tie your shoe? IBM believes that city life can be awfully inconvenient—and that cities should be designed with the needs of ordinary citizens in mind.

How you and I could become nodes in the internet of things

A group of French researchers believe that the sensors and transmitters we wear will route and relay data, not just collect it. We won't just be connected to the network. We'll be the network.

Ever wonder what the network infrastructure of the future will be? Try looking in the mirror.

Some day our bodies — or at least the clothing or accessories that adorn them — could become key network nodes in the internet of things. European researchers think that sensors and transmitters on our bodies can be used to form cooperative ad hoc networks that could be used for group indoor navigation, crowd-motion capture, health monitoring on a massive scale and especially collaborative communications. Last week, French institute CEA-Leti and three French universities have launched the Cormoran project, which aims to explore the use of such cooperative interpersonal networks.

fitbit oneThe concept of wireless body area networks (WBANs) isn't a new one. WBANs could be used to sever the cord between patients and their monitoring equipment. Companies like Apple and Heapslylon are exploring the possibility of connected clothes with embedded sensors. We've already begun embracing a new era of wearables, such as Google Glass to Fitbit (see disclosure), designed to become extensions of our senses and movements.
